Coming Out of the Shadows

Coming Out of the Shadows

May 29 – June 30, 2026 | Galleria Fort Lauderdale

Step into an important chapter of South Florida history with Coming Out of the Shadows, a compelling exhibition exploring the experiences, challenges, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in pre-Stonewall Fort Lauderdale during the 1960s.

Featuring historic photographs, rare documents, and memorabilia, the exhibition sheds light on a transformative period marked by social change, activism, and the pursuit of equality. Through powerful storytelling and archival materials, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the individuals and events that helped shape the region's LGBTQ+ history.

Presented in collaboration with Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library and Florida International University, the exhibition is curated by Fred Fejes, Professor Emeritus of Multimedia Studies at Florida Atlantic University, and Julio Capó, Jr., Associate Professor of History at Florida International University.

Coming Out of the Shadows is free and open to the public during mall hours and serves as a meaningful tribute to the pioneers, advocates, and community members whose stories continue to inspire future generations.
